Staying at Xhale Resort & Spa puts you close to some of eastern Idaho's most stunning natural attractions. One must-see? Big Springs—a crystal-clear spring near Island Park with a flow rate that will leave you in awe.

Whether you’re planning a full day of exploring or just a scenic stop between Yellowstone and your cottage, Big Springs is an unforgettable destination.

One of the Largest Natural Springs in the U.S.

Big Springs produces 120 million gallons of pristine water daily—enough for about a million people. This water flows up through ancient lava rock into a pool so clear you can see the obsidian-speckled bottom.

The spring stays at a constant 52°F (11°C) year-round, fed by snowmelt from the Yellowstone Plateau. It’s one of the 40 largest springs in the U.S. and serves as the main headwater for the Henry's Fork of the Snake River.

Watch the Trout

Standing on the bridge above Big Springs offers a unique experience. Huge rainbow trout—some over 2 feet long—swim lazily through the crystal-clear water, unbothered by onlookers. Toss some bread crumbs, and the water bursts with activity.

Fishing isn’t allowed near the spring, allowing the trout to thrive in this ideal habitat. The clean gravel bottom and constant cold water create a perfect ecosystem. It’s a treat for families, photographers, and anyone who loves nature.

The Johnny Sack Cabin

Steps from the spring is the Johnny Sack Cabin, a beloved local landmark. Built in 1932 by a German cabinet maker, the cabin’s craftsmanship is extraordinary. Johnny Sack used a planed-bark technique to create textured surfaces throughout the cabin, from window frames to furniture.

At just 4’11”, he even designed parts of the cabin to fit his height. After his passing in 1957, locals preserved it, and it’s now recognized as a significant architectural site. Tours are available mid-June to Labor Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a small donation.

Easy Access for All

Big Springs is an easy, accessible outing. A half-mile, wheelchair-friendly trail winds through the area, offering opportunities to spot wildlife like osprey, bald eagles, deer, and even moose. Picnic areas nearby make it a great spot for all ages and fitness levels. Plan to spend an hour or two.
