What is Hidden Falls โ and why does it matter?
Grand Teton National Park is famous for its dramatic skyline โ thirteen peaks over 12,000 feet rising almost straight up from the valley floor. But the park isn't just a view from a car window. It has trails, wildlife, glacial lakes, and canyon hikes that put you right inside that landscape.
Hidden Falls sits at the mouth of Cascade Canyon, one of the park's most iconic canyon corridors. The waterfall drops around 100 feet in a series of steps fed by snowmelt from the peaks above. It's been the most popular trail in the park since at least 1939, and it's easy to understand why โ you get a mountain waterfall, a glacial lake, big views, and accessible trail all in one outing.
The "hidden" in the name comes from how the falls tuck behind a rock face and are somewhat concealed until you're right on top of them. It's a small but genuinely satisfying reveal after the uphill climb.

Two ways to do this hike โ pick what works for you
This is one of the more flexible trails in the region because you have a real choice about how you want to experience it.
Option 1: Take the shuttle boat across Jenny Lake (recommended for most visitors) Hidden Falls is an easy 1 mile round trip out-and-back hike with 300 feet of elevation gain U.S. National Park Service when you take the shuttle boat across Jenny Lake to the west shore trailhead. The boat is run privately, departs roughly every 15 minutes throughout the day, and cuts the hiking distance significantly. An adult round-trip ticket is $20, children ages 2โ11 are $12, and seniors 62 and up are $17. Our Wild Wanderers This is the most popular option โ and makes the hike easy enough for young children and grandparents alike.
Option 2: Hike the full loop around Jenny Lake The moderate version is a 4.9 mile round trip out-and-back hike with 620 feet of elevation gain U.S. National Park Service if you walk the Jenny Lake Trail around the south shore to the trailhead. This adds roughly 4 miles to your day but gives you lake views, a quieter start before the boat crowds arrive, and a much better chance of spotting wildlife. If you want to see the park rather than just the waterfall, this version is worth it.
What to expect on the trail
Whether you take the boat or walk, the trail from the west shore dock to Hidden Falls is the same โ and it's straightforward.
From the west shore boat dock, the trail heads uphill through a spruce-fir forest. The path climbs steadily but gently, crosses Cascade Creek on a wooden bridge, and winds up into the canyon. The rushing waters from the waterfall can be heard along the trail before you arrive, and it traverses a few bridges where you can see the waters rushing beneath. Ape Cave
At the end of the trail, the falls open up โ a wide, powerful cascade dropping 100 feet down a rocky face. There's a viewing area at the base that makes for great photos, and the cool mist from the falls is a welcome break on a warm day.
Tip: No matter what time of year you visit, bring a light jacket โ the temperature drops noticeably at Hidden Falls. Ape Cave
Add Inspiration Point for a bigger day
If you still have energy after the falls, visitors wishing to hike further can continue up the trail another 0.5 mile to Inspiration Point. U.S. National Park Service This adds around 200 feet of elevation and rewards you with sweeping views of Jenny Lake, the valley below, and the Gros Ventre Mountains to the east. The switchbacks are steeper here and the trail is narrower in spots โ fine for most adults, but worth checking before bringing very young children to the top section.
If you do the full Hidden Falls plus Inspiration Point loop, budget around 3 hours total for a comfortable pace.
Wildlife and things to watch for
Grand Teton is genuinely wild. Bears, moose, elk, and smaller animals are regularly spotted throughout the park, including on and around the Hidden Falls trail. The Jenny Lake shoreline trail in particular is one of the better spots in the park for a moose sighting โ especially in the early morning.
Carry bear spray if you're hiking before the shuttle opens or on a quieter section of trail. It's also worth keeping kids close and staying on marked paths. Wildlife here is not habituated to people in the way you might expect โ they're genuinely wild animals in their natural habitat, and keeping your distance is both safer and more respectful.
