What is Schwabacher Landing?

Schwabacher Landing is a boat landing located a few miles south of Snake River Overlook, along the east shore of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The landing is located off the combined US Route 26/89/187, 5 miles north of the park's main headquarters at Moose, Wyoming. Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce

In practical terms, it's a spot where the Snake River braids and slows — where one of its channels spills into a wide, calm side pool that reflects the mountains above it like a mirror. Those beavers have been busy. The landing is actually divided into two areas: Upper and Lower Schwabacher Landing. Getting there from Xhale Resort & Spa

Xhale Resort & Spa is located at 1421 1st St, Idaho Falls, ID. Schwabacher Landing is approximately 120 miles away — plan on about 2 hours and 45 minutes of drive time in normal conditions.

The route from Xhale takes you south on I-15 briefly, then southeast on US-26 through Swan Valley and along the Snake River canyon into Jackson, Wyoming. From Jackson, continue north on US-191/89/26 for about 16 miles. Watch for a small wooden sign on the left side of the road reading "Schwabacher's Landing Road" — it is easy to miss. Turn left and follow the road, which starts paved and transitions to gravel, for about 1 mile down to the parking area.

Exact landmark tip: The turnoff is 4 miles north of Moose Junction, just past the Glacier View Turnout on the left side of the highway. If you reach the Teton Point Turnout heading south, you've gone slightly too far.

Two areas to explore — know before you park

There are two parking lots at Schwabacher Landing, each with its own area to explore. If you have time, visit both areas, as reflections can be found around both of them. Geology Science

Lower Schwabacher Landing is the more famous of the two. This is where the iconic reflection pool sits — the one you've seen in travel magazines and on Instagram. The trail from the lower parking lot to the main viewing area is short and flat, less than a quarter mile, and the views open up gradually as you follow the bank. Don't hesitate to walk a few hundred yards up the trail — many people do not actually make it to the best reflecting pool since it is not visible from the parking lot. Upper Schwabacher Landing is quieter, less photographed, and the better spot for beaver watching. The upper area tends to have more active wildlife in the early morning and at dusk, and the views of the mountains from a slightly different angle are equally lovely. Wildlife including moose, pronghorn, mule deer and bald eagles are commonly seen in the immediate vicinity of the landing. The best time of day to visit — and the honest truth about crowds

This is where Schwabacher Landing is genuinely different from most other spots in Grand Teton. Though it's recommended to visit most trailheads and sites in Grand Teton in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid crowds, Schwabacher Landing is different. Park visitors come here to experience the sunrise and sunset, so early mornings and evenings are often the busiest times. If you want to avoid crowds, mid-afternoon is your best bet. USGS

Good to know before you go

Season: Schwabacher Landing Road is typically open from mid-May until mid-October — snow keeps it closed the rest of the time. The gravel road can also become impassable after heavy rainfall, so check conditions before you go in shoulder seasons. USGS

The road: The turnoff road is about 1 mile long — paved for the first few hundred yards, then gravel and bumpy. Take it slowly, especially on blind corners. Standard passenger cars handle it fine in dry conditions. Low-clearance vehicles should use caution after rain.

Parking: Both lots are small and fill fast at sunrise. If the lots are full, look for pull-outs along the gravel road itself. Do not block the road or other vehicles.

Trail conditions: The trail from the parking lot is flat, unpaved dirt. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Tree roots cross the path in spots — watch your footing.

Accessibility: The lower parking lot is reachable by car and the first section of trail is flat and relatively easy. The full 4-mile river trail is not wheelchair accessible due to uneven terrain and tree roots.

Park entrance: Grand Teton National Park charges a 7-day vehicle entrance fee of $35. Annual passes are available and cover both Grand Teton and Yellowstone.

No facilities at the site: There is a vault toilet in the main parking area. No food, water, or services on-site. Pack everything you need including plenty of water.
