Yellowstone National Park sits on top of one of the world's largest active volcanic systems. The Upper Geyser Basin is the most geyser-dense area in that already extraordinary park. Getting there from Xhale Resort & Spa

Xhale Resort & Spa is located at 1421 1st St, Idaho Falls, ID — about 142 miles from the Old Faithful area of Yellowstone. In good conditions, plan on roughly 2 hours and 48 minutes of drive time.

The route breaks naturally into two legs: Idaho Falls to West Yellowstone (around 110 miles, about 1 hour 50 minutes), then through the West Entrance and across the park to Old Faithful (another 55–75 minutes depending on conditions).

Crowd tip: The National Park Service recommends arriving at a park entrance before 7 a.m. or after 12 p.m. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. is when the busiest congestion hits — including entrance lines, parking waits, and wildlife jams. A 5:30–6 a.m. departure from Xhale puts you in perfect position.

Vehicle reservations are not required to enter Yellowstone, but an entrance pass is. Passes range from $20 to $35 depending on your entry type, with annual passes available if you plan to visit more than once.

What to see — and in what order

The basin can feel overwhelming at first glance. Here's a simple, logical route for a first-time visitor that covers the highlights without backtracking.

1. Old Faithful Visitor Education Center Start here before anything else. Pick up eruption predictions for Old Faithful and other major geysers, get oriented with the exhibits, and grab a map. The center explains the science behind what you're about to see — and it makes the whole experience much richer.

2. Old Faithful The most famous geyser in the world erupts roughly every 90–102 minutes, reaching heights of 106 to over 180 feet for 1.5 to 5 minutes. Check the predicted time at the visitor center, then time your walk so you arrive 10 minutes early. The viewing area is less than a quarter mile from the center.

3. Geyser Hill Just across the Firehole River from Old Faithful, Geyser Hill is home to over 50 geysers in a compact area. The ground here looks almost alive — steam rising from cracks, water pooling in vivid blues and oranges, small eruptions happening spontaneously around you. This is where most visitors slow down and linger.

4. Morning Glory Pool Continue along the boardwalk toward Morning Glory Pool — a stunning hot spring famous for its deep blue center and bright orange and yellow edges. The colors come from heat-loving microorganisms called thermophiles. The walk from Old Faithful is about 2 miles round trip and mostly flat — a lovely way to see the quieter side of the basin.

Bonus if you have extra time: Grand Geyser — just off the main trail — is described by the National Park Service as the tallest predictable geyser in the world, reaching around 200 feet and lasting 9–12 minutes. If you see a crowd forming near it, check the predicted eruption time. It's worth the wait.

Good to know before you go

Season: The road from the West Entrance to Old Faithful is open to regular vehicles from mid-April through October 31, weather permitting. Summer (June–August) is peak season — arrive early or expect significant crowds.

Food & services: The Old Faithful area has multiple dining options including the Old Faithful Inn Dining Room, the Geyser Grill, and the Bear Paw Deli. There's also a general store and gas station on-site — you don't need to pack everything.

Accessibility: Wheelchair-accessible walkways connect all parking areas to Old Faithful and the surrounding features. This is one of the most accessible geothermal areas in the entire park.

Pets: Pets are not permitted on boardwalks, trails, or in thermal areas — even if carried. Leave them at home for this one.

Safety: Stay on the boardwalks at all times. Hydrothermal water in Yellowstone can cause severe burns in seconds. The vivid colors near the edges exist because of extreme heat — not in spite of it.

Do I need to be an experienced hiker to visit? Not at all. The main boardwalk from Old Faithful to Morning Glory Pool is about 2 miles round trip, mostly flat and paved. Even the shorter loop around Geyser Hill is easy walking. Good walking shoes are all you need.

Does Old Faithful erupt on the hour? Not exactly — but it's still one of the most predictable geysers in the world. Current average intervals are around 90–102 minutes, and the NPS provides predicted eruption times at the visitor center, nearby lodges, and on the NPS app. You'll typically know within a ±10 minute window, making it easy to plan your visit around it.

What's the difference between Upper, Midway, and Lower Geyser Basins? All three are along the same road and each has a distinct character. Upper Geyser Basin is the most geyser-dense and is where Old Faithful lives. Midway Geyser Basin, about 6 miles north, is home to Grand Prismatic Spring — Yellowstone's largest hot spring and one of its most photographed features. Lower Geyser Basin is larger and more spread out with meadows and less dense features. For a first visit, Upper Geyser Basin is the right starting point, and Midway makes an excellent quick add-on the same day.

Is it worth going if it's rainy or cloudy? Yes — arguably more so. Steam from the geysers shows up dramatically against a moody overcast sky, crowds tend to be lighter, and cloudy light is far kinder for photography than harsh midday sun. Bring a light waterproof layer and enjoy it.
