The Xhale Advantage

Adventure in Every Season

Quiet, green, and waking up. The main highway (US-26/89/191) stays open all winter, but the interior Teton Park Road reopens to vehicles around May 1 — so the full-loop day trip really comes together in May, when the valley greens up against still-snowy peaks. Daytime 50s–low 70s°F; nights in the 30s.
Wildlife is concentrated on the valley floor: bison calves in Antelope Flats, moose along the Snake River and Oxbow Bend, and bears emerging with cubs. Arrowleaf Balsamroot turns the flats yellow into early summer.
Tours to consider:
- EcoTour Adventures — Sunrise Wildlife Tour — ~4-hour half-day safari at peak wildlife hours; naturalist guides, scopes, hotel pickup.
- Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris — Half-Day Safari — Gros Ventre and Mormon Row route, binoculars provided, morning or afternoon departures.
- Teton Science Schools — Wildlife Expeditions — All-day private interpretive safari led by biologist-naturalists with high-powered scopes.

Full access. Every road, trail, and visitor center is open, the Jenny Lake shuttle is running, and the one-day loop in this guide works exactly as written. The tradeoff is crowds — start early from Xhale and reach Jenny Lake's dock before 11 AM to stay ahead of the buses. Moose, pronghorn, and bison are active at dawn and dusk.
Tours to consider:
- EcoTour Adventures — Full-Day Grand Teton Tour — Sunrise start on the back roads, with a picnic lunch on Jackson Lake; scopes and 4x4 included.
- Grand Teton Lodge Company — Jenny Lake Scenic Cruises — Guided boat cruises across Jenny Lake, ideal paired with the Hidden Falls hike.
- Grand Teton Lodge Company — Snake River Scenic Floats — Calm-water floats with nonstop Teton views; a relaxed complement to a hiking day.

Fall
The best single visit window. Crowds thin after Labor Day, aspens turn gold against the peaks, and mid-to-late September is the most beautiful time to photograph the Tetons. The moose and elk rut peaks in late September and October — bull moose are most visible in the willow bottoms near Oxbow Bend and Gros Ventre. The Teton Park Road stays open until November 1, so plan the full loop before then.
Tours to consider:
- EcoTour Adventures — Sunset Wildlife Tour — Half-day evening safari timed to the rut and golden light; guides and scopes, hotel pickup.
- Teton Science Schools — Sunset Expedition — Guided sunset safari focused on rut behavior, with expert educators and optics (through Sept. 30).
- Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris — Full-Day Safari — Custom vehicle with roof hatch, Swarovski scopes; strong for fall photography.

Hushed and dramatic. The main highway stays plowed year-round for Teton views and winter wildlife, but the interior Teton Park Road closes to vehicles November 1–April 30, becoming a groomed corridor for skiers and snowshoers. Wildlife clusters low: the nearby National Elk Refuge hosts thousands of wintering elk, plus bison, moose, bighorn sheep, and the occasional wolf.
Tours to consider:
- National Elk Refuge Sleigh Rides — Horse-drawn rides among thousands of elk. Tickets at the white trailer, 532 N. Cache St.; shuttles every 20–30 min, 10 AM–4 PM, mid-December through early April.
- EcoTour Adventures — Winter Wildlife Tour — Heated-vehicle naturalist safaris for wolves, moose, and bighorn sheep, with scopes and hotel pickup.
- Teton Science Schools — Winter Expedition — Guided high-top-van safari with optics; strong for February bighorn sheep and moose.
1 Day · ~198 Miles Round-Trip · Best May through October
The Tetons don't ease into view — they erupt 7,000 feet straight up from the flat Jackson Hole valley floor with almost no foothills, one of the most dramatic geological formations in North America. Many visitors who've seen both quietly admit they find Grand Teton even more striking than its famous neighbor to the north. And from Xhale Resort & Spa in Idaho Falls, you're closer to it than you might think.
The South Entrance of Grand Teton is about 99 miles from Xhale — roughly a two-hour drive over Teton Pass. This guide lays out a complete single-day itinerary, with every drive time measured from Xhale, covering the Snake River Overlook that Ansel Adams made famous, the glassy alpine water of Jenny Lake, the iconic barns of Mormon Row, and the antler arches of Jackson Town Square — and gets you back to the hot pools by evening.
The Xhale Advantage: Most visitors pay resort-town prices in Jackson or drive hours from Salt Lake City. Staying at Xhale puts you two scenic hours from the Tetons, with hot pools and a world-class spa waiting when you return. Why Start From Xhale
The scenic route from Xhale is half the reward. Take US-26 E from Idaho Falls through Swan Valley, then Hwy 31 to Victor, and cross Teton Pass into Jackson Hole. It's more beautiful than the direct highway and passes through a string of charming Idaho mountain towns. You wake up two hours from the trailheads, not five — and you come home to Xhale's hot pools instead of a Jackson resort bill.
Start early. Leave Xhale no later than 6:30 AM to beat the crowds at Jenny Lake and catch the famous morning light on the peaks.
Suggested One-Day Grand Teton Schedule
6:30 AM — Depart Xhale, Idaho Falls
Drive east on US-26 E through Swan Valley. The morning light along the Snake River is beautiful. At Swan Valley, take Hwy 31 toward Victor, Idaho, a small mountain town on the Idaho side of Teton Pass.
8:00 AM — Victor, Idaho (20-minute stop)
Stop at Victor Valley Market for fresh sandwiches to pack as a picnic lunch. Victor is a quieter, more local alternative to Jackson, with a growing food and coffee scene.
8:30 AM — Cross Teton Pass (Hwy 22)
A dramatic mountain road cresting at 8,431 feet with switchbacks and panoramic views. Pull over at the summit for views of both Teton Valley (Idaho) and Jackson Hole (Wyoming) below. Watch for moose on the descent.
Note: Teton Pass has grades up to 10%. It's well-maintained and paved, but allow extra time and check road conditions at 511.idaho.gov before your trip.
9:15 AM — Snake River Overlook (20-minute stop)
One of the most famous photography locations in American history — Ansel Adams photographed this exact view in 1942. The entire Teton Range stretches across the horizon above the Snake River. Morning light on the peaks is extraordinary.
Address: US-89/191, Grand Teton National Park · Free with park entry.
9:45 AM — Schwabacher Landing (30-minute stop)
Turn off the highway onto Schwabacher Landing Road (a short gravel road) to reach one of the park's most serene spots. The still Snake River mirrors the peaks on calm mornings, and beaver dams and moose are common at this hour. Many photographers consider it even better than Snake River Overlook.
10:30 AM — Mormon Row Historic District (30-minute stop)
Mormon Row is home to the T.A. Moulton Barn, built in the 1910s by early homesteaders — likely the most photographed barn in America. The rustic wooden structures against the jagged peaks are unforgettable. Walk the flat dirt road between the historic buildings.
Address: Antelope Flats Rd, Grand Teton National Park · Free · Flat walking · Paved parking.
11:30 AM — Jenny Lake (2–2.5 hours)
Jenny Lake is the heart of the park — a glacier-carved lake at the foot of the highest peaks. Take the Jenny Lake Boat Shuttle ($18 round-trip) across the water and hike the 2-mile round-trip trail to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, a moderate climb with panoramic views of Jackson Hole.
Book the shuttle: the ferry is run by Grand Teton Lodge Company, first-come, first-served. The first boat departs at 7 AM; arrive at the dock no later than 11 AM in summer to avoid long waits. See gtlc.com for current hours and pricing.
2:00 PM — Oxbow Bend (30-minute stop)
Drive north to the Oxbow Bend Turnout, where Mount Moran (12,605 ft) reflects in the still Snake River. A wildlife photographer's favorite: great blue herons, bald eagles, river otters, moose, and trumpeter swans are regularly spotted here.
Address: US-89/191 near Jackson Lake Junction, Grand Teton National Park.
3:00 PM — Jackson Town Square & Early Dinner
End the day in the charming Town of Jackson, Wyoming. The famous Jackson Town Square features four arches made entirely of naturally shed elk antlers from the National Elk Refuge. Browse the boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants around the square.
Dinner options:
- The Bunnery — iconic Jackson breakfast and lunch spot; the OSM bread is famous
- Local Restaurant & Bar — elevated Wyoming cuisine with local game
- Snake River Grill — upscale Western dining, a great splurge
Note: prices in Jackson run higher than Idaho Falls — it's a resort town.
5:30 PM — Depart Jackson, Head Back to Xhale
Return via the Teton Pass / Victor / Swan Valley route. The evening light on the Tetons during the drive back is spectacular. Back at Xhale by 7:30–8:00 PM.
Tonight at Xhale: Earn the Soak
You hiked to Inspiration Point and climbed a mountain pass twice in one day. Slip into Xhale's hot pools, book a massage, and let the trail miles dissolve. It's the quiet, well-earned counterpoint to a very big day.
What to Pack for a Grand Teton Day Trip
- Layers — mountain weather changes fast; bring a fleece even in summer
- Waterproof jacket — afternoon thunderstorms are common
- Sturdy walking shoes — the Hidden Falls hike is a moderate climb
- Binoculars — essential for Oxbow Bend and Schwabacher Landing wildlife
- Sunscreen and sunglasses — high elevation means intense UV
- Reusable water bottles — altitude can mask dehydration
- Bear spray — strongly recommended on Teton hikes
- A picnic lunch — grab sandwiches in Victor before the pass
